MELBOURNE'S EVENT PRECINCT
Just a few minutes up Swan St on the tram, you are at the edge of the MCG, sporting icon of Australia, centred in green parklands beside the Yarra River. Adjacent is the Rod Laver Arena, site of the largest Tennis tournament in the world. The centre is also buzzing with entertainment events year round.
A few minutes further on, and you are at Princes Gate, entry to downtown Melbourne if you want to shop.
Or if art is of interest, visit the Victorian Gallery just across the bridge - largest in the southern hemisphere, but also don't miss the Potter Gallery the fabulous collection of indigenous art in the quirky Federation Square building - a unique maze of crazy glass and stone.
You can easily lose a day in Melbourne: cruise the Yarra, see the city from the observation deck, visit Victoria Market and enjoy the colourful restaurants lining Southbank on the river edge.
But also leave some time to discover Swan St in Richmond at your doorstep.
Everything is within a stroll. Breakfast in the cafes. Dine at the restaurants. 'Torch' across the road in Swan St has the best coffee in Melbourne (well, we think so). You can sit and eat breakfast while the world goes by: locals, visitors, the rumble of Melbourne's trams. Get to know Dan the friendly owner. Or venture in to one of the edgy cafes and have vodka with breakfast!
Up the hill there is a clutter of Greek restaurants. One called Agape ('love' in Greek) is usually full for the obvious reason that its food is fabulous and and you'll find the waiters have an engaging comic irony. Grandma Funk's next door has lurid retro colours and good cheap food. Back closer to your house, Wild Oscar's serves music with meals. Nearby Dizzey's Jazz place takes you back in time with the thrash of loud Jazz.
Choose one of Melbourne’s best pubs and clubs - 'Public House' - voted best pub in Melbourne, is just around the corner and there’s another 5 to choose from, most with live music.
Want anything? It’s here, within walking distance. Supermarket at the end of the street. Dimmey's old time Department store. Doctors, dentists, hairdressers, bakers, Melbourne’s biggest fresh fish supplier, fruit, flowers, and many more. Derek's DVD store 'Picturesearch' claims to have the largest selection of DVDs in Australia. Sounds outrageous for a small frontage, but just ask this local character and you'll be amazed. The shop goes up and up with endless art-house movies. You'll also pass Dr Follicle's, the hairdresser with crazy retro chairs, where you are served a beer with your haircut, and you hear the local goss.
For the fashionistas, there are many FACTORY OUTLETS, right here in Swan St. A short tram ride up Church St and you are in the famous Bridge Road fashion strip, a melting pot of edgy boutique startups, and factory outlet bargains.
You too can live the Richmond experience!
